Expect the Unexpected: Re-routing a drain pipe

So, we put a 10" deep sink and disposal into a kitchen that never contemplated either of those.

Result? The drain pipe under the sink was 6" too high: The sink drain was below it, much less the disposal outlet. If we'd attached to that, we'd have had standing water in our sink and dishwasher.

So work stopped while I dug into the walls. Thankfully, re-routing the drain lower only involved opening the wall behind the dishwasher so I can 'patch it up' rough and not worry about making it look good.

Here's where we ended up:

The drain pipe (the one going off to the right) originally came in much higher, where you can see the joint I added after cutting the vent pipe. Like this:

So a couple hours extra work not such a big deal. Nor the extra trip to the Depot to get the necessary PVC fittings (and thank goodness it was PVC pipe - so much easier to work with!). And of course "doing it right" versus a bodge-job that would cause problems later was necessary.

The only real hassle was the very limited space made everything 3x more difficult.

Just goes to show you... the unexpected little 'gotchas' are what throw the plan off.
